Marine Science Exploration
"Explore the wonders of Long Island Sound."
Small groups of students will work together in research teams aboard the 30-foot commerical fishing vessel "FIRST LIGHT." Student teams will use scientific instruments to examine samples; do water quality testing and record data on marine life. Students will also experience saltwalter fishing using hook and line, trap and seine trawl techniques. Students can participate in "hands on"/"minds on" learning as they see, touch and feel the marvel's of aquatic life in Long Island Sound.
Socials Skills Enhancement
"Adventure Based Learning"
The maritime backdrop provides a unique opportunity for students to learn social skills including cooperation, communication, problem solving and decision-making. This adventure based experience allows students to become aware of the perspectives of others and incorporate this information into the decision making process by working as a team on a common goal. In addition, these activities foster group cohesion, trust and tolerance, which may be useful in increasing pro-social skills and behavior.
